PreSchool-Grade 2-Glitzy and exciting packaging is what this book has choosing it. Turner has written new commentary for Saint-Sa'ns's music, accompanied by the full-length, music-only CD, cleverly designed to fit in to a plastic holder. Additionally to offering one-page commentaries about the 14 sections with this famous musical work, Turner gives basic education for the orchestra used to the composition and helpful hints on the way to listen to the distinctive animal sounds created by certain instruments. The text is serviceable, nevertheless the tone is condescending at times. "Do you imagine the elephant enjoys dancing? Do you believe he knows that he can't dance very well?" Finer, more humorous commentary is available around the CD "Classical Zoo" (Telarc, 1997), with Itzhak Perlman as narrator and new poems by Bruce Adolphe, but then, it really is exactly the recording. Practicality and management of the two resources a single are considerations for librarians, but Carnival with the Animals, while not perfect, is one of several ways to have young children to pay attention to and absorb classical music. Williams's full-page and spot illustrations are colorful and fanciful, adding another dimension towards the presentation.
